The Orientation Of London's Churches

Today's #30DayMapChallenge is to do a map containing polygons. My Church Orientations map displays London churches every bit extruded polygons. The reach rose on the map too visualizes the orientation of all the churches inward the electrical flow map view.

Since the eighth Century churches bring tended to survive built facing towards the east. The principal focus of a church, the alter, is placed at the due east goal of the church, oft inward an apse. The major entrance to the church building is oft placed at the due west end. In fact the give-and-take 'orientation' genuinely comes from the do of constructing buildings to human face upwardly the east. Building a church building the other means around, alongside the entrance at the due east together with the apse at the western end, is called 'occidentation'.

nine English linguistic communication cathedrals - mainly oriented to the due east (looking at you lot Liverpool Cathedral)

When early on Christians prayed they would human face upwardly towards the east. Hence the tradition of edifice churches alongside the modify towards the east. One theory for why Christians pray towards the due east is that the beginnings of the organized church building was inward Europe together with worshipers were praying inward the direction of Jerusalem. Another theory for why churches human face upwardly due east is because they bring been aligned to where the Sun rises on each church's saint day.

My Church Orientations map uses the edifice footprints (the lines which define the outline of the churches) for the orientation reach rose. In other words the reach rose shows the orientation of all the churches' walls (in the electrical flow map view). In full general the map reveals that churches inward London are unopen to orientated eastwards, alongside a fair part orientated betwixt due east together with north-east.
